In response to recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, Finnish leaders have expressed their firm stance on the matter. President Alexander Stubb and Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen underscored that the question of who governs Greenland is solely up to Denmark and Greenland themselves.
The comments came following Trump’s statements at a NATO summit, where he reiterated his belief that Greenland should fall under U.S. control. Both Stubb and Valtonen dismissed the notion, with Valtonen emphasizing Finland’s unwavering support for Denmark’s territorial integrity. She stressed that Arctic security concerns should be resolved through existing channels of defense cooperation rather than by making territorial claims.
Valtonen pointed out that Denmark and the United States are actively engaged in discussions about defense collaboration, a process that is complemented by NATO’s broader initiatives to bolster security in the Arctic region. This approach, she suggested, is a more appropriate framework for addressing any security issues in the Arctic.
Greenland, which is a self-governing region within the Kingdom of Denmark, has become a focal point of renewed debate among European allies. Trump’s remarks have sparked discussions surrounding Arctic security, the sovereignty of territories, and the stability of the region.
