The Trump administration has completed authorization for $15.67 billion in military equipment sales to Israel and Saudi Arabia, with the State Department announcing Friday comprehensive packages designed to strengthen allied defense capabilities. Israel will receive $6.67 billion in advanced systems while Saudi Arabia secures $9 billion in air defense weaponry, marking one of the largest combined arms transfers to Middle Eastern partners in recent years and underscoring American commitment to regional security partnerships.
Israel’s acquisition strategy includes Apache attack helicopters ($3.8 billion), light tactical vehicles ($1.98 billion), armored vehicle upgrades ($740 million), and utility helicopters ($150 million). The Apache helicopter procurement represents the largest single component, providing 30 advanced aircraft equipped with rocket launchers and sophisticated targeting systems designed to enhance Israeli Defense Forces’ precision strike capabilities and improve defensive operations along borders, vital infrastructure, and population centers.
The 3,250 light tactical vehicles will enable Israeli forces to move personnel and logistics while extending lines of communication across challenging operational terrain, improving rapid response capabilities and logistical efficiency. The armored personnel carrier power pack upgrades will modernize platforms that have been in service since 2008, ensuring continued operational effectiveness. The light utility helicopters will complement similar equipment already in Israeli service, expanding aerial support capacity for various mission profiles.
Saudi Arabia’s package focuses on 730 Patriot missiles worth $9 billion for air defense enhancement, designed to protect land forces of Saudi Arabia, the United States, and local allies while significantly improving the integrated air and missile defense system in the Gulf Region. The State Department emphasized that the sale will support foreign policy and national security objectives by improving the security of a major non-NATO ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress.
Congressional Democrats have challenged approval procedures and consultation timelines, with Representative Gregory Meeks stating that the Trump administration has blatantly ignored long-standing congressional prerogatives while also refusing to engage Congress on critical questions about the next steps in Gaza and broader U.S.-Israel policy. The ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee accused the administration of rushing to announce the deals in a way that would disregard congressional oversight and years of standing practice.
