Donald Trump says “predictable” water and “substantial” power are the goals on the Nile. The former President has offered to mediate the dispute regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, aiming to broker a deal between the two nations.
Trump’s plan relies on technical verification. He believes that with “the right technical expertise,” the nations can agree on a schedule of water releases that protects Egypt. In return, Ethiopia would be allowed to generate the electricity it needs for its growing economy.
The conflict has been a stalemate for years. The dam is now officially open, but the lack of a legal framework for its operation remains a major issue. Egypt and Sudan have demanded binding rules, while Ethiopia has resisted. The situation remains fragile.
Trump’s previous involvement in the dispute was marked by high pressure and little success. Despite this, he continues to claim credit for managing the conflict. His recent description of the dam as a “big problem” highlights his continued interest.
By offering to coordinate the negotiations, Trump is attempting to depoliticize the issue. His focus on a technical solution aims to provide the assurances both sides need to sign a deal.
