Brighton & Hove Albion came agonisingly close to securing all three points at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, with a goalmouth scramble nearly producing a winner in their 1-1 draw against Manchester City. The result extends City’s winless run to three consecutive Premier League matches and leaves them five points behind leaders Arsenal.
Manchester City had taken the lead four minutes before halftime through Erling Haaland, who converted a penalty after Jeremy Doku was fouled by Diego Gomez. Following a VAR review that confirmed the decision, Haaland stepped up confidently to score his 150th goal for the club and his 20th in the Premier League this season, ending a three-match scoring drought.
City threatened to extend their advantage early in the second half when Bernardo Silva capitalised on a Brighton error, but his shot rebounded off the woodwork. The match saw tensions flare when goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma and Maxim De Cuyper became involved in a heated exchange, with both players receiving yellow cards.
Brighton equalised on the hour mark through Kaoru Mitoma, who received a pass from the flank and expertly guided a low shot into the far corner from the edge of the box. The goal shifted the momentum entirely in Brighton’s favour, as they began to control possession and create dangerous opportunities.
The visitors dominated the closing stages and nearly snatched a winner when Mitoma found Gomez inside the box, but the shot was saved, and Mitoma’s follow-up from a tight angle struck the post in a frantic goalmouth scramble. In the dying minutes, Haaland had a golden opportunity to secure victory for City, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a superb save to deny him and preserve the draw.
