Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, US negotiators, held discussions in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, aiming to advance efforts towards ending the ongoing conflict with Russia. This meeting followed their recent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Witkoff described the dialogue with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” expressing optimism that broader negotiations involving the US, Ukraine, and European nations could soon be initiated.
The talks in Kyiv were briefly joined by national security advisers from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, highlighting the international interest in resolving the conflict. President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s intention to engage in trilateral discussions with the US and European partners to further peace negotiations. He also stressed the importance of continued Western support as Ukraine braces for another challenging winter, identifying air defense, energy assistance, and increased US liquefied natural gas supplies as key priorities.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, peace negotiations have been hampered by significant disagreements, particularly concerning territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Previous discussions have revolved around a 20-point peace plan developed collaboratively by Washington and Kyiv, but agreement on several critical issues remains elusive between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian military strikes continue to target various regions within Ukraine. Ukrainian officials reported at least eight fatalities and 69 injuries across the nation in the previous day. The capital, Kyiv, has faced persistent drone attacks, further compounded by shortages of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles. As the conflict nears its fifth year, Ukrainian authorities remain vigilant about potential Russian attacks on energy infrastructure and the possibility of intensified strikes during the winter months.
