President Donald Trump went on the offensive against Iran’s diplomatic credibility on Thursday, accusing the country of deliberately misrepresenting its negotiating position. In a sharp Truth Social post, Trump insisted that Iranian representatives were privately begging for a ceasefire deal even as their government publicly downplayed its interest in the US proposal. He described the behavior as contradictory, “strange,” and ultimately self-defeating.

The US proposal at the center of the dispute encompasses 15 comprehensive points, including economic sanctions relief, nuclear programme rollbacks, restrictions on Iran’s missile capabilities, and the restoration of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies, has emerged as one of the most critical points of contention in the negotiations. Iran’s rejection of the US framework has created a diplomatic standstill.

Iran’s own peace conditions, shared through state television, include an end to strikes against its senior officials, formal security guarantees, war damage reparations, and recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. These demands are fundamentally incompatible with what Washington is offering and indicate that Iran is seeking a transformation of its strategic situation rather than simply a ceasefire. Resolving such a wide gap will require enormous political will from both sides.

The human cost of the ongoing conflict is devastating and growing. More than 1,500 people have been killed in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon, while casualties have also mounted in Israel and neighboring countries. Thirteen US military personnel have died, and millions of civilians in Iran and Lebanon continue to live in displacement and hardship.

Trump’s offensive against Iran’s diplomatic credibility on Thursday was designed to expose and neutralize what he saw as a deceptive strategy. With military operations continuing alongside stalled diplomacy, the region is caught in a dangerous limbo. Iran’s response to this latest challenge from Washington could either open a path to peace or lead to a further and potentially catastrophic escalation.
