In supporting Denmark, the EU warns Trump’s tariff threat might cause a critical unity test. A major diplomatic crisis is unfolding as European Union leaders have summoned the envoys of all 27 member states for an emergency meeting on Sunday. The move follows President Trump’s ultimatum linking tariffs to the purchase of Greenland.
Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa released a statement warning of a “dangerous downward spiral.” They stated that the EU would not be divided by external pressure. The leaders vowed that Europe would remain united, coordinated, and committed to upholding the sovereignty of its members.
The economic stakes are high. Trump declared that a 10% tariff would be imposed on goods from Denmark, Germany, France, and the UK starting February 1. He added that the rate would climb to 25% on June 1 if a deal for Greenland is not reached, placing a heavy burden on European trade.
The EU also sought to clarify the military situation in the Arctic. Leaders described recent Danish exercises as standard procedures designed to strengthen security. They insisted that these pre-coordinated drills are not a threat, but rather a contribution to shared Arctic stability.
Solidarity with Denmark is the driving force behind the EU’s emergency actions. Leaders confirmed that talks between the US and Denmark started last week but emphasized that coercion is unacceptable. The upcoming meeting at 4:00 GMT on Sunday will determine the bloc’s collective response.
