Former President Donald Trump announced that he will award Rudy Giuliani the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, following Giuliani’s recent car accident in New Hampshire.
Giuliani, the former New York City mayor, gained national recognition for his leadership after the September 11 attacks. In recent years, he has faced legal and professional consequences, including disbarment and criminal charges, related to his efforts to challenge the 2020 US presidential election results. Two election workers successfully sued Giuliani for defamation over claims he promoted regarding the election, resulting in a $148 million judgment.
Giuliani, 81, remains hospitalized after sustaining multiple injuries in a car crash, including a fractured thoracic vertebra and lacerations, but is expected to be discharged soon. The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who make significant contributions to the security, national interests, or public life of the United States.
