The United States Air Force has reversed the promotions of 135 security forces personnel due to a scoring error in a critical test used for promotions. This decision came about after it was discovered that an outdated scoring key had been mistakenly applied to the Security Forces Specialty Knowledge Test (SKT), leading to inaccurate results. These service members had initially been informed that they would be promoted to the rank of technical sergeant.

Upon realizing the error, a comprehensive rescoring of all 2,285 exam papers was conducted. This thorough review allowed the Air Force to identify the correct candidates who actually qualified for promotion, ensuring the integrity of the process. Consequently, the 135 promotions initially granted in error were rescinded, and the rightful candidates will now receive their promotions. The total number of promotions available remains at 586, unchanged by this correction.

Air Force officials emphasized that this incident was a singular event attributed to human error, clarifying that artificial intelligence tools were not involved in the grading process. To reassure those affected and to maintain trust in the promotion process, the Air Force has notified the impacted individuals and offered support to help them manage the situation.

In response to this error, the Air Force has strengthened its internal review procedures to prevent similar occurrences in future promotion cycles. This step aims to enhance the accuracy and reliability of the systems in place, ensuring that such errors do not happen again and maintaining the confidence of personnel in the promotion process.
